Review of Chrysler U-Connect system in a 2005 Chrysler 300C

with example audio from a LG PM-325 phone
This is a personal review of the Bluetooth U-Connect system available in my 2005 Chrysler 300C, as coupled with my LG PM-325 Sprint phone. Please note that the PM-325 does not support the signal/battery indicators over bluetooth, so you will not see them in this review. This is a limitation of my phone, not a limitation of the U-Connect system. On other brands of phones, you will also receive the signal and battery info over the U-Connect system.

My overall impressions of the system are very favorable. The voice recognition is very good, and it integrates seamlessly with the radio and EVIC (info display near gauges). The incoming audio is phenomenal, and the outgoing audio is very good at low speeds. However, when traveling at speeds greater than 70mph, I've found that I have to speak loudly for the party on the other end to hear me clearly. The U-Connect system does a lot of noise reduction processing, which can make your voice sound very strange when there is a lot of background noise (even in the quiet cabin of the 300C). I suspect if the microphone was mounted closer to the driver, this would be less of an issue. Regardless, the system is very usable at all speeds, as long as you are willing to talk louder when you're on the freeway. The incoming audio volume is adjustable via the volume knob on the radio (or the steering wheel). This volume setting is independent of the radio, and the nav lady, and it remembers the previous setting when a call takes place.

Here are some answers to questions I had before using the U-Connect system:
  • Does it automatically mute the radio and notify you of an incoming call? Yes.
  • Does the stored name show up with the caller ID on an incoming call? No.
  • Will it dial numbers simply by saying the number? Yes.
  • Will it integrate with the "Voice Dial" feature that already exists on my phone? No. You must create a separate voice address book in the U-Connect system.
  • What happens when you are on a call and you turn off/exit the vehicle? The radio/U-Connect system stays on even after you open the door, until you walk out of range or transfer the audio back to your phone. When either of those two things happens, the audio is seamlessly transferred back to the handset and you can continue the call.
  • Do I have to do anything to activate the system each time I enter the vehicle with my phone? No. It automatically detects the existence of your phone and links up with it.
  • Can you mute the microphone? Yes. The mute button on the radio will mute the microphone, but not the incoming audio for the call.
  • Can you listen to the radio at all during a U-Connect call? No. All radio functions are muted when you are on a call. You can, however, transfer the audio back to your phone and then listen to the radio while on the call.
