My name is Dave... I’m 28 years old, and I live in a city near Detroit, MI. I've worked in the IT industry for 14 years. I started when I was 14, working for a small computer company, while helping out at local computer shows. This eventually grew into a full time technical position with the company, and I eventually became the manager of the technical department. After a little over 5 years with that company; I needed more room to grow. I moved on to a job with Entex Information Services, which was later purchased by Siemens Business Services. Here I was classified as a consultant, and had a wide range of responsibilities. I started out developing standard OS images for desktops, to be used in large desktop migrations. I quickly moved into a project where I supported the appraisal department for a large financial insitution. I spent a couple of years working on projects in the health care industry, as well. Most of that time I developed NALs (Netware Application Launchers) for the standard desktop migration that my company was implementing. For the last two and a half years, I have been on a project at Ford Motor Company. At Ford, I managed the operations team for their Extranet. This involved 24 hour support of all of the firewalls, public Internet circuits, routers, switches, mail routers, etc.. As you can imagine, this became very tiresome after a while, and really burned me out. I recently moved on to work for Netech Corporation, which is a statewide Cisco integrator. Here I have much more variety in my day to day activities, and much less of the corporate overhead to deal with. I'm very happy with the company, and the people that I work with. I hope to stay with this company for a while, and expand my Cisco expertise.
Some of my hobbies are computers, cars (as you may have guessed), camping, off-roading (Jeep Jamborees or unorganized fun), driving in general (road trips, exploring, etc.), electronics, and ham radio. I also like to think of myself as somewhat of an audiophile.
Some of my favorite bands are Cake, Sarah McLachlan, Rush, Led Zeppelin, Alice in Chains, Nine Inch Nails, Jimi Hendrix, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. I listen to a pretty eclectic selection of music, ranging from Classic and 80’s rock to modern female vocalists.
While I was growing up, my family always had old cars with a lot of problems, so I would watch and learn while my dad fixed them. I guess I owe a lot of my passion for cars to my dad for that. He would let me help him when I could, which is what really got my interest. My dad has worked for Chrysler for many years, which is how I became such a fan of their cars.
Ever since I started driving, I’ve never been satisfied with the performance of my vehicle, no matter how fast it was. I’m always trying to pull those extra ponies from the engine. With a lot of trial and error, I’ve learned pretty much what works and what doesn’t work when trying to get more power from an engine. I’ve applied a lot of this knowledge to my challenger with mixed results. I’m learning a lot by tinkering around with it. It’s hard to get tire-shredding performance out of a 318, but it’s my goal to get there. I’ll be putting up another section on my page that tells the story of how I wound up with a ’73 Challenger.
Lately, I have been devoting a lot of my time to ham radio. I got my Novice class license when I was 8 and never really did much with the hobby. I upgraded to Technician when I was around 12 and began talking a little bit on 2m. Since then I have upgraded to an Extra class license and have been having a lot of fun talking around the world on HF. See my ham radio page for more information.
