2004 Neon SRT-4 Feature Highlights

Engineers in Chrysler Group’s Performance Vehicle Operations (PVO) have been tweaking the whip-snapping performance of the award-winning 2003 Dodge SRT-4 model. Transferring what they learn on the street in their own cars to those coming off the assembly line, PVO engineers have refined the engine calibration of the 2.4-liter intercooled turbo in the 2004 Dodge SRT-4 and boosted the output to 230 horsepower (172 kW) at 5,300 rpm and 250 lb.-ft. (339 N•m) of torque from 2,200-4,400 rpm.

As a car created for tuners by tuners, the 2004 Dodge SRT-4 continues to be the second-quickest car in the Dodge lineup, accelerating from 0-60 mph in just 5.8 seconds. Only the Dodge Viper turns in a quicker time.

“Winning Sport Compact Car magazine’s first-ever Sport Compact Car of the Year award last year was only the beginning for the Dodge SRT-4,” said Dan Knott, Director — Performance Vehicle Operations. “Our PVO engineers upped the ante once again as they put even more power into the Dodge SRT-4.”

The 2004 Dodge SRT-4 includes a new NGC3 engine control module with an updated calibration that widens the torque range. The broader range reduces torque drop off, while providing more torque at lower rpm levels for less shifting under normal driving conditions. Larger fuel injectors also have been incorporated for 2004, which increase fuel flow.

In addition to the increased horsepower and torque, the 2004 Dodge SRT-4 features a new torque-sensing limited-slip differential as standard equipment. Developed in conjunction with Quaife, a leading manufacturer well known to performance enthusiasts, this feature provides more traction when accelerating out of the corners, something Dodge SRT-4 customers will put to use on the tarmac. Designed specifically for the T850 transaxle and installed right in the factory, the limited-slip differential builds on Dodge SRT-4’s reputation for including performance parts backed by the company’s full warranty.

New BF Goodrich KDW2 three-season tires also are standard equipment on the 2004 Dodge SRT-4. Developed to match the vehicle’s high-performance suspension and handling characteristics, the new tire’s design and rubber compound provide maximum grip for cornering, accelerating and braking.

To underscore Dodge SRT-4’s performance capability, unique bright pedal pads are a new feature. An optional sunroof package also is available for 2004.

Electric Blue paint replaces Solar Yellow in the 2004 Dodge SRT-4 color palette, which includes Flame Red, Black and Bright Silver Metallic.

Available side air bags continue as a Dodge SRT-4 option.

Dodge SRT-4 Plus Mopar® Performance Parts Equals Gear-Grabbing Acceleration

Auburn Hills, Mich. - Mopar®, Chrysler Group's parts and accessories brand, is launching a complete line of performance upgrades designed to make the Dodge SRT-4, already the quickest production car in America under $20,000, even quicker.

When Chrysler Group's Performance Vehicle Operations (PVO) engineers were given the challenge to make this Dodge's factory tuner car even quicker, they didn't yield at yellow, nor did they stop at red; they saw green and gassed it. Upgrades include "go-faster" items such as a turbo upgrade, new manifolds and transaxle enhancements. PVO engineers have been working behind the scenes to develop Mopar Performance parts that will be available this summer at local Dodge dealers.

"Whether you're involved with the street scene or the racing crowd, Mopar has the right parts and accessories for your Chrysler, Jeep® or Dodge vehicle," said Chris Cortez, Chrysler Group, Senior Vice President - Global Service and Parts. "Our customers want to go faster and personalize their vehicles. We want them to look at Mopar first."

According to the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), $182 billion was generated in aftermarket retail sales in 2002. Of that, nearly $27 billion was from performance parts and accessories. Additional research on the "tuner" (compact performance market) shows that it generated $2.5 billion in retail sales in 2002, and the vast majority was spent by consumers 16 to 27 years old.

"It's important to build relationships with this group of consumers now, as they enter the vehicle purchasing cycle of their lives," added Cortez. "The compact tuner performance segment is truly a phenomenon, and we have to be part of this culture."

Mopar Performance Stage 1 Turbo Upgrade Kit
Mopar Performance is launching a whiplash-inducing Stage 1 turbo upgrade kit. This kit pushes the power and performance of the Dodge SRT-4's 2.4-liter turbocharged engine to 240 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. The kit consists of four fuel injectors, which produce a10-percent greater flow-rate than stock injectors, and one Mopar Performance powertrain control module (PCM). It's calibrated for increased wide-open throttle and part-throttle boost, more aggressive exhaust note during deceleration, improved turbo response, enhanced first-gear boost schedule for a higher-performance launch and a boost hold feature during wide-open throttle shifts.
"The only thing better than horsepower is more horsepower," said Kevin Miller, Senior Manager - Mopar Brand Excitement and Motorsports. "We're excited to be able to bring the Stage I turbo upgrade kit to market in June 2003 for just $399."

Mopar Performance Turbo Blow-Off Valve
Next in the arsenal of performance parts offerings for the Dodge SRT-4 is the Mopar Performance turbo blow-off valve. The blow-off valve is designed to prevent both premature boost leakage and compressor surge. This blow off valve is a must-have accessory that enhances the sound of the turbo hard at work. The Mopar Performance turbo blow-off valve will be available for purchase next month.

Mopar Performance Limited-Slip Differential (LSD)
Mopar's limited-slip differential is another must-have component in making the SRT-4 even quicker. The Quaife, Automatic Torque Biasing (ATB) differential will be available exclusively from Mopar. The unique design offers maximum torque, improves handling and steering and puts the power where it is most needed. The system powers both drive wheels under nearly all conditions. It senses which wheel has better grip and biases the power to that wheel. It does this smoothly and continuously, and without ever completely removing power from the other wheel. Mopar's LSD will be available for purchase later this month.

Mopar Performance Short-Throw Shifter
The Mopar Performance short-throw shifter is a direct, bolt-on, self-contained unit. It offers a dramatic improvement in shifting performance due in large part to reduced shifter travel, or "shifter throw." Shift throw refers directly to actual physical travel of the shifter stick, affecting the time it takes to shift from one gear to another. In performance driving scenarios, the additional seconds -- or fractions of a second -- a factory stock shifter takes to go from one gear to another may result in slower lap times. The Mopar short-throw shifter gives the racer a competitive advantage. The Mopar Performance short-throw shifter will be available for purchase later this month.

Mopar Performance Colored Valve Covers
In July, Mopar will offer colored versions of the production Dodge SRT-4 valve covers. The valve covers will be available in red, blue, yellow, black and silver.
Mopar Performance Ceramic-Coated Intake Manifold
Mopar will offer a ceramic-coated version of the production SRT-4 aluminum intake manifold. This intake manifold will be finished in a highly polished silver, and will be available for purchase next month.

Mopar Performance Gauges and Pods
Mopar Performance has developed a full line of gauges to fit the needs of the street performance enthusiast. These gauges will be available only through Mopar and feature an aluminum bezel and four different face styles. The styles include silver with the SRT logo, silver with the Mopar logo, carbon fiber with the Mopar logo and white with the Mopar logo. The types of gauges that will be available are boost, nitrous, voltmeter, exhaust gas temperature, oil pressure, fuel pressure, air-fuel ratio, water temperature, a two-inch tachometer and a five-inch tachometer. Mopar will also offer single or dual gauge pods that mount on the driver's-side "A" pillar to house gauge combinations. These gauges and gauge pods are available for purchase this month.

Pricing for all Mopar Performance parts can be obtained by visiting www.mopar.com. Mopar Performance parts can be purchased from authorized Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge dealers.
Mopar Performance parts are designed and tested by Chrysler Group PVO engineers for Chrysler Group products. No aftermarket company can make this claim. All of the testing is done in-house, one of the many reasons Mopar Performance parts are the preferred parts for serious street enthusiasts and competitive racers.

Sweet Design Makes for Eye Candy Backed by Performance in 2003 Dodge SRT-4

Los Angeles, Jan 4, 2002 - While all racing enthusiasts want their car to perform well, they also want it to look great, too, inside and out. Both the interior and exterior design of the new 2003 Dodge SRT-4 include cues that convey the customized look that enthusiasts strive for.

"Dodge SRT-4's design cues suggest more of a customized look right off the lot, but are not so overwhelming that they squelch the creativity of enthusiasts looking to personalize their car in the aftermarket," said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President—Design. "There was a 'sweet spot' we wanted to hit by using a design theme that includes unique front and rear fascias, sill-mounted ground effects and a Mopar signature deck-mounted spoiler."

On the outside, performance cues start up front where a new front fascia and a unique steel hood with an integral air intake perches, ready to cool the powerful 2.4-liter turbo engine lurking beneath. The Dodge crosshair grille design gives Dodge SRT-4 a bolder face. Just behind the lower grille sits a cast aluminum intercooler.

"We deliberated about whether or not to hide the intercooler with grille textures or even paint it black," said Lance Wagner, Director—Exterior/Interior Design. "But tuners like to show off the components they've added, so we left the intercooler in its raw state to give the front end a more authentic, straight-from-the-street feel."

Dodge SRT-4 features special 17-inch aluminum wheels, which were shown on the original 2000 Neon SRT concept car. The expressive wheels were purposefully designed to look like aftermarket wheels, with tape-on weights and fuller width rim sections. The unique spoke pattern allows for better airflow to the brakes.

Viewed from the side, Dodge SRT-4's clean design mimics the sleek look popular on the street. A special side sill and door cladding give SRT-4 the low, stealthy appearance of a car made for racing.

"We're really pleased with the way the sills sit and the way the bigger tires fill the wheel well openings, both of which enhance Dodge SRT-4's lower stance," said Wagner.

A new rear fascia and deck spoiler continue the performance look of Dodge SRT-4. "The boldness of the spoiler adds to the outrageous quality of the vehicle. It's like the exclamation point on the whole theme of the car," said Wagner. The taller, basket-handle type spoiler also improves vehicle handling by generating downforce.

The rear fascia complements the side sill and enhances the appearance of the car. The fascia also accommodates new polished stainless dual exhaust tips.

Overall, the scale of the fascia and the spoiler adds to the rear stance, yet without bulk. Instead, the overall gesture is more muscular than massive, according to Wagner.

Minimal satin silver badging completes the exterior performance theme and maintains the uncluttered appearance preferred by many enthusiasts. Like the Dodge Viper SRT-10, the number four in SRT-4 denotes the number of cylinders in the engine.

The Dodge SRT-4 is available in four exterior colors, including Solar Yellow, Black, Flame Red and Bright Silver Metallic.

The first thing drivers will notice when they strap into the newest pocket rocket on the street are the special performance seats. Taking cues from the seats in Dodge Viper SRT-10, Dodge SRT-4 front seats have enhanced lumbar and lateral sections for better support during racing-type maneuvers. The new Agate-colored cloth on the body of the seats is textured for better grip through the corners. The side bolsters of the front seats are trimmed in vinyl and curve to stabilize occupants, further enhancing the performance racing feel of the vehicle. And passengers traveling in the back of SRT-4 aren't left out of the racing experience, since the car's rear seats also feature the textured fabric.

A new carbon-fiber-look leather wraps the top of the Dodge SRT-4 steering wheel for greater control. The wheel's unique three-spoke design also provides a better view of the instrument cluster gauges, an important feature for performance-minded drivers, especially SRT-4 owners who want to know when they've hit the "sweet six"- - accelerating from 0-60 mph in just 5.9 seconds.

Unique gauge designs in Dodge SRT-4 feature special silver faces with satin silver ring accents. Gauge pointer hubs also have a metal finish, giving them the feel of finely tuned precision instruments dedicated to performance. The same satin metal trim also is featured on the instrument panel center stack, around heater, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) knobs and on door handles.

"It's not just an eyewash of wannabe's," said John Ozark, Senior Product Designer—Dodge SRT-4 Program. "It's a car that wants to get up and go, and the precise interior design reflects the performance under the hood." Along those lines, a special Dodge SRT-4 turbo boost/vacuum gauge finds a convenient spot underneath the brow just to the right of the instrument cluster. Unlike aftermarket gauges, the SRT-4 turbo gauge has been thoughtfully incorporated as a design element of the brow.

The performance-enhanced design continues down on the floor where a new satin silver cue ball shift knob tops a short-throw shifter that is surrounded by a boot made of the same textured carbon-fiber-look leather as the steering wheel.

As drivers turn the key and rev the engine, special Dodge SRT-4 pedals announce they're about to unleash a car meant for racing. The vehicle's unique cast aluminum accelerator, clutch and brake pedals feature a cast dimple surface texture to assure good traction when drivers put the pedal to the metal. Against the monochromatic Agate-colored fabric and side bolsters, the bright trim pieces create a complete performance and professional appearance.

The standard Dodge SRT-4 engine delivers the performance of aftermarket kits costing anywhere from $2,500 to $3,500, but as a production powerplant, it is covered by a full factory warranty. The SRT-4 features a 2.4-liter DOHC turbo-boosted 205 horsepower in-line four-cylinder engine that delivers 220 lb.-ft. of torque available from 2000 to 4800 rpm. And the added boost from the turbo is just the beginning.

Paired with SRT-4's turbo-charged powerplant is a high-performance transaxle that features a heavy duty, five-speed manual NVG T850 transaxle and a muffler-less, dual outlet exhaust system with wider, 2.5-inch polished stainless tips. Adding to the performance capability are a larger diameter throttle body and a high flow intake manifold. New equal-length halfshafts, high capacity clutch and drive plate assemblies and unique engine and transaxle mounts round out the Dodge SRT-4 transmission system.

Dodge SRT-4 also features ABS and four-wheel disc brakes with larger diameter calipers and rotors, which lie ready and waiting to stop all the power under the hood. The vehicle's standard 11-inch disc brakes with upgraded pads assure that SRT-4 can drop from 60-0 mph in less than 120 feet. Other safety features of Dodge SRT-4 include standard driver and front passenger air bags, as well as optional side air bags.

Even the Dodge SRT-4's sound system was designed with vehicle performance in mind. A best-in-class AM/FM stereo CD with six speakers is standard equipment on the SRT-4.

Stage 1, 2 and 3 Upgrade info

  • Stage 2 Turbo upgrade kit: An additional 30-50 horsepower (to 260-280 hp)

  • Stage 3 Turbo kit offers the ultimate: Over 300 horsepower

  • Center Line, Mich., May 10, 2004 -Mopar®, Chrysler Group's parts and accessories brand, offers a complete line of performance upgrades designed to make the ultra-quick and ultra-popular Dodge SRT-4 even more desirable.

When Chrysler Group's Street and Racing Technology (SRT) engineers were given the challenge to make Dodge's new sport compact even quicker, they saw many tuner-inspired opportunities. The SRT-designed upgrades include “go-fast” items such as turbo upgrade kits, upgraded suspension parts and transaxle modifications.

Dodge SRT-4 owners have been raving about the Mopar goods that are already available, and they’re eagerly awaiting the next Mopar Performance products to arrive from the Mopar Performance Parts engineers at SRT. The parts are — or soon will be — available at local performance parts shops and Dodge dealers.

“We engineered these parts with driving enthusiasts in mind,” said Dan Knott, Director – Street and Racing Technology. ”Many aftermarket products for vehicles like the SRT-4 are focused on appearance. We aren’t ignoring that, but our main concern is improving the driving performance of this highly capable vehicle. And we do that through products designed by enthusiasts on our team who ‘walk the talk’ when it comes to developing credible performance parts.

“Our extensive line of products from Mopar Performance hits a home run in adding to the performance leadership of the Dodge SRT-4,” Knott added.

The Dodge SRT-4 was designed to appeal to the highly sought-after 16-to-27-year-old age group, but current sales statistics show that SRT-4 owners span an impressive range of ages from teenagers to baby boomers and beyond.

Mopar Performance Stage 3 Turbo Upgrade Kit
If the Dodge SRT-4 pushes the envelope, the Mopar Performance Stage 3 Turbo Upgrade Kit for the SRT-4 tears that envelope to pieces. Stage 3, scheduled for release in mid-June, will add a larger turbo unit (Mitsubishi TD05HR-15GK2-10cm2) to help bump up the SRT-4’s horsepower numbers over 300† and torque figures to 320 ft-lbs. (both unofficial figures). Stage 3 includes the injectors, MAP and TIP sensors from the Stage 2 Kit. Upgrades include the Stage 3 PCM with Stage 1&2 calibration features and Stage 3 settings, a high-flow (75 psi) fuel pump module, a demand-regulated fuel rail assembly and the new turbo.

The most notable part of the Stage 3 Kit is the hi-tech TD05HR-15GK2-10cm2 turbo unit (TD05 for short). This unit claims a 16 percent larger compressor wheel diameter to flow and compress more intake air. A 19 percent larger turbine wheel diameter flows more exhaust gas and reduces backpressure. The TD05 also boasts a 67 percent increase in turbine scroll area for reduced backpressure and more top end power.

    Mopar Performance Short-Throw Shifter
The Mopar Performance Short-Throw Shifter is a direct, bolt-on, self-contained unit. It offers a dramatic improvement in shifting performance due in large part to reduced shifter travel or “shifter throw.” In performance driving scenarios, the additional seconds — or fractions of a second — a factory-equipped shifter takes to go from one gear to another may result in slower lap times. The Mopar Short-Throw Shifter gives the racer a competitive advantage.

    P4510485 — Mopar Performance Short-Throw Shifter MSRP $119

    Mopar Performance Clutch
This performance clutch from Mopar Performance has a substantially increased torque capacity and is designed to accommodate power levels from the Stage 3 Turbo Upgrade Kit. The unit uses six damper springs instead of four, and the clutch disc and hub are completely unique. The clutch disc material can withstand higher friction. Perhaps the most significant highlight of this clutch is that the pedal feel is comparable to stock, as the pedal effort is only very slightly increased. Summer availability.

P4510647 — Performance Clutch MSRP TBA

    Mopar Performance Limited-Slip Differential (LSD)
Mopar's limited-slip differential is another high-quality component that helps make the SRT-4 even quicker. The Quaife automatic torque-biasing (ATB) differential is available exclusively from Mopar. The unique design improves handling and steering, and powers both drive wheels under nearly all conditions. It senses which wheel has better grip and biases the power to that wheel. It does this smoothly and continuously, and without ever completely removing power from the other wheel. Note: This LSD is standard equipment on the 2004 Dodge SRT-4, but was not standard on 2003 cars.

    P5007923 — Mopar Performance Limited-Slip Differential MSRP $1369

    P4510588 — LSD Installation Kit MSRP $69

    Mopar Coilover Suspension Kits
The Mopar Coilover Suspension Kits are a result of a partnership between Mopar Performance and KW Suspensions. Utilizing DaimlerChrysler specifications to ensure optimum performance, the kits feature new stainless steel INOX technology exclusive to Mopar Performance.

The Mopar Coilover Kits’ thread design and aluminum spring perches allow SRT-4 owners to easily adjust vehicle height. Additionally, the special thread shape and specific properties of the polished suspension struts ensure that virtually no corrosion occurs – even after years of the strongest weather influences.

The basic Stage 1 suspension components include a set of higher rate drop springs (25 mm) that utilize production Dodge SRT-4 dampers and an anti-sway bar kit that features a 26 mm front bar and a triple adjustable 19 mm rear stabilizer. Both components will be available this summer.

The Stage 2 Mopar Coilover Suspension Kit is a complete height adjustable coilover system with lowering parameters to 30 mm. Its fixed-valve dampers are calibrated to provide a balance between “comfortable” road feel and sporty driving.

Stage 3 Mopar Coilover Suspension Kits are height- and rebound-adjustable, with 50 percent more adjustability than fixed Stage 2 settings. This allows the driver to tune the SRT-4 suspension to even greater degrees, from a “comfortable” ride, to sporty, to stiff — tailoring road handling to the driver’s specific needs.

P4510454 — Stage 1 Anti-Sway Bar Kit Summer availability. MSRP TBA

P4510458 — Stage 1 Performance Springs Summer availability. MSRP TBA
